Hair Loss:  Reasons You Should Consider Hair Transplantation

Meanwhile, below are the causes of hair loss and the process of hair transplantation.

What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation refers to a surgical procedure for moving hair sacs from a section of the body referred to as the ‘donor site’ to the ‘recipient site’, the balding part. It is meant to treat baldness. During the process, grafts with hair follicles inherently resistant to hairlessness are transferred to the hairless scalp.

The back of the head is the donor site. The recipient site is where you want to grow your hair, like your eyebrows or beard. The donor tissue contains hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding.

Hair transplantation can be achieved using two types of procedures. These include Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), which involves taking a strip of skin with thousands of healthy hair follicles. The other is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which involves removing individual follicles directly from the scalp, often one at a time.

Hair transplantation can also restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, pubic hair, and chest hair and fill in the scars resulting from surgery, hair transplants and face-lifts.

What are the causes of hair loss?

The causes of hair loss are numerous, but they can be narrowed down to three main categories. These include hormonal, hereditary, and medical.

Hormonal-Hormonal hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in men and women. It is caused by a genetic sensitivity to the hormones dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone. DHT is a derivative of testosterone, and it is a much stronger form of the hormone. The increased production of DHT occurs naturally when the body begins to develop adult characteristics. This type of hair loss usually affects both sexes equally and first appears in early adulthood.

Hereditary-Hereditary hair loss is the second most common type of hair loss, affecting nearly 40% of men over 40 years old in varying degrees. Its cause is revealed by its name. It is passed down from parent to child genetically. This type of hair loss affects both sexes equally and can start at any age.

Medical causes– This represents the final category, accounting for 10-15% of all hair loss cases and 30-50% of cases among women. The most common medical conditions that cause hair loss are alopecia areata, cicatricial alopecia, and androgenic alopecia. Alopecia areata is a form of autoimmune disease in which the system attacks its hair follicles.

This causes areas of non-scarring hair loss. Examples include patches of hair loss on the scalp or loss of eyebrows or eyelashes. Cicatricial alopecia is a form of scarring disease in which there is damage to the hair follicles leading to permanent scarring. Androgenic alopecia is caused by the hormonal imbalance of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inside the hair follicle.

Hair transplantation, or hair replacement, is a surgical approach that moves hair from one body part to another, usually from the back and sides of the head to areas with thinning or no hair. The most common areas that need treatment are the crown, temples, frontal scalp, and the top of the head. Hair transplantation can be used in conjunction with medication to treat baldness or by itself for a variety of other conditions that cause hair loss.
