We’ve occasionally felt down in the dumps at times. But depression is a clinical issue that transcends the occasional hard life montages. Unfortunately, 30-50% of individuals with depression find antidepressants ineffective. How do you deal with depression? We spoke to a San Diego psychiatrist who offers innovative psychiatric solutions such as transcranial magnetic stimulation. Here are the approved tips for dealing with depression.

1. Talk to Someone

We understand it takes an awful lot of courage to talk to someone. Talking to a non-judgmental person is part of talk therapy entrenched in support systems and sharing. Find a close relative or a colleague and enjoy sharing.

2. Sleep Better

Depression disrupts your wake cycle and aggravates the situation. Sleeping better reduces cortisol which is the stress hormone. If you have trouble sleeping, you can seek sleep disorder treatment, engage in physically demanding activities or buy a new satin pillowcase and linen sheets. You will be surprised by the comfortable sleep you can get on a foam mattress and linen sheets.

3. Connect Food with Your Emotions

We are not saying you should stress eat. Flooding your body with nutritious meals is a mainstream nutritional psychiatry method that alleviates signs of depression. Eat foods rich in zinc to combat depression.

4. Try Interpersonal Psychotherapy

IPT links depression to unresolved trauma or any other causative. The approach treats the underlying cause of depression, leading to a better daily life.

5. Socially Connect with Peers

Sharing a laugh with your peers is one of the greatest feelings. Depression makes you detach from your peers. But decoupling from your friends is counterintuitive. Make time to forge stronger ties through social activities or team-building activities. Hiking and kayaking are great places to start. Ultimately the social connections you form will be the framework for the support network you need in dealing with depression.

6. Stop Negative Thoughts

The therapist will rewire your brain to alter negative thoughts through cognitive behavioral therapy. Long periods of negative thinking descend into depression. You can also avoid negative situations and people who are likely to restart your negative thinking cycle.

7. Enjoy Physical Activities

Physical activities such as sports and hobbies like chess need your mental acumen and physical exertion. Find your niche in sports and excel at it. The satisfaction you’ll get from achieving a specific goal in sports will boost your mood and improve your self-esteem.

8. Express Your Emotions

Sometimes you may not have the best clique of friends. Instead of sharing your feelings with judgmental friends, express your emotions through creative writing. You can write your life story with a positive twist. You may even write a bestseller from your life story and motivate others.

9. Avoid Alcohol and Recreational Drugs

Alcohol, weed, cocaine, meth, etc., don’t treat depression. They only give you a false feeling of satisfaction which hides your emotions in the short term. However, in the long term, alcohol exacerbates depression. Avoid alcohol at all costs.
